Renters Insurance Discounts for Security Devices
Sometimes. State Farm offers renters a discount for a monitored fire or burglar alarm, and Lemonade says deadbolts, burglar alarms and smoke alarms earn a renters discount. Neither publishes the amount. Monitored alarms are named most often; no insurer page we read names smart locks or cameras alone for renters. Ask before buying for the discount.

Which renters insurers publish a security discount?
Two renters insurers we checked describe a security device discount for renters on their own sites, as of October 2026:
| Insurer | What it says for renters | Devices named | Amount published? |
|---|---|---|---|
| State Farm | Home alert protection discount | Monitored fire alarm and/or burglar alarm | No; discounts vary by state |
| Lemonade | Protective devices get a discount | Deadbolts, burglar alarms, smoke alarms | No |
When you call, ask for the discount by the insurer's own name for it (State Farm calls it home alert protection), and ask whether it needs the device to be monitored. Other large insurers publish protective device discounts on their homeowners pages without saying whether the same applies to renters policies, so ask. The homeowners side, insurer by insurer, is in home insurance security discounts by insurer.
On size, neither insurer publishes a figure, and any percentage applies to your own renters premium, so check that number before counting on savings. Delaware's insurance department says discounts for basic devices such as a burglar alarm or deadbolts are usually at least 5% on homeowners policies; it does not give a separate renters figure.
Does a smart lock or camera get a renters discount?
Not by name on the pages we read. Lemonade names deadbolts, and a smart lock that is also a deadbolt may count, but that is the insurer's call, not ours. Progressive's guidance says many insurers credit video surveillance cameras and alarm systems with door, window and motion sensors, but it speaks of insurers generally and of homeowners coverage.
| Device | Named by a renters insurer page we checked? | Most likely to count when |
|---|---|---|
| Monitored burglar alarm | Yes (State Farm, Lemonade) | It reports to a monitoring center |
| Monitored fire or smoke alarm | Yes (State Farm), smoke alarms (Lemonade) | It is monitored or meets the insurer's list |
| Deadbolt | Yes (Lemonade) | On exterior doors |
| Smart lock | No | It also works as a deadbolt and the insurer accepts it |
| Camera alone | No | The insurer lists cameras for your policy type |
If you rent, many of these devices are also the practical ones to use without drilling. Renter-friendly options are covered in home security for renters and smart locks for renters, and the door basics are in the apartment door security checklist.
What proof do renters insurers ask for?
The insurer pages above do not spell out the paperwork. For monitored systems, the usual proof is a monitoring certificate from the provider. Ring sends one to the account owner of a Ring Alarm on 24/7 Professional Monitoring, or on a Smoke and CO monitoring plan, and says the certificate becomes void if monitoring or the plan is canceled. SimpliSafe issues a monitoring certificate to US customers on its professional monitoring plans; its support page frames it for homeowners insurance, so confirm your renters insurer accepts it.
For unmonitored devices such as deadbolts, ask the insurer what proof it accepts before you buy; neither renters page above says. The full certificate process, provider by provider, is in how to get an alarm certificate, and the broader question of whether security lowers premiums is in does home security lower insurance.
One caution: buy a device because it makes the apartment safer, not for the discount. No renters insurer we checked publishes or promises a set amount.
Frequently asked questions
- Does renters insurance give a discount for an alarm system?
- Often, if the alarm is monitored. State Farm's renters page describes a home alert protection discount for a monitored fire or burglar alarm, and Lemonade says burglar alarms earn a discount. Neither publishes the amount, and State Farm says discounts vary by state.
- Do I get a renters discount for a Ring camera?
- Not on the pages we checked. Ring's insurance certificate is for Ring Alarm with Professional Monitoring or a Smoke and CO monitoring plan, not cameras alone. Ask your insurer whether it credits cameras on renters policies.
- Does a smart lock lower renters insurance?
- No renters insurer page we read names smart locks. Lemonade names deadbolts, so a smart deadbolt may qualify if your insurer accepts it. Confirm before buying one for the discount.
- Does the discount follow me when I move?
- Not automatically. Lemonade notes that a renters policy covers a specific property at a specific address, so a move means updating the policy, and the insurer may re-check your devices. If your discount relies on a monitoring certificate, send a new one for the new address; Ring says its certificate is void if monitoring lapses.
- How much is the renters insurance discount for security devices?
- The renters insurers checked here (State Farm and Lemonade) do not publish it. Delaware's insurance department says homeowners discounts for basic devices are usually at least 5% and gives no separate renters figure. Multiply any percentage your insurer quotes by your own renters premium to see what it is worth.
