The three renter constraints

A renter-friendly security system has to pass three tests that homeowners can ignore.

What no drilling actually means

Every brand markets easy install, so here is what each one actually documents, checked against official pages in August 2026:

• SimpliSafe: entry sensors install by peeling the backing off adhesive strips and pressing for 30 seconds, per SimpliSafe's own installation guide. Screw mounting exists as an option, not a requirement. The base station just sits on a surface and plugs in.
• Ring Alarm: the Alarm Security Kit product page says you connect your sensors in the Ring app and start protecting your whole home, no tools required. The base station and keypad are plug-in.
• Abode: Abode's renter guidance states that most Abode sensors and devices use peel-and-stick adhesive strips or simply sit on a flat surface, with no drilling or screws.
• Wyze: sold as a self-install DIY kit (plug-in Sense Hub, battery keypad, battery sensors). Wyze's shop pages do not spell out the mounting method as explicitly as the others, so check the in-box instructions if adhesive-only matters to you.
• Kangaroo: Kangaroo describes its sensors as batteries-included, peel-and-stick, app-controlled.

The honest caveat in every lineup: video doorbells and outdoor cameras usually do want screws. If you add a doorbell to any of these systems, that specific device may need landlord sign-off or a third-party no-drill mount, even though the alarm system itself does not.

Renters who want professional monitoring

Self-monitoring is a legitimate choice for a renter: you save the fee, and in a small apartment a siren plus phone alerts covers a lot. The tradeoff is honest but real: with no monitoring plan, nobody requests dispatch if you are asleep, in a meeting, or on a plane. Moving with your system

The portability promise is real but has a small operations checklist:

1. Peel sensors off slowly (warming stubborn adhesive with a hairdryer reduces paint lift risk; you own any wall damage on move-out).
2. Buy replacement adhesive strips before move-in day; used strips do not re-stick reliably.
3. Update your address with your monitoring provider before arming at the new place. Dispatch goes to the address on file, and a wrong address on an alarm event is the worst possible time to discover the oversight.
4. Check local alarm permit rules at the new address. Some cities require an alarm permit even for renters with professionally monitored systems, and false-alarm fines land on you, not the landlord.
