Straight from its plans page: with no plan you get full app access (iOS/Android, smartwatch, desktop), live video streaming from connected cameras, real-time push notifications, a 10-day event timeline, and smart home integrations including Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, and Home Assistant. The siren and sensors keep working locally during an internet outage, though remote notifications pause until the connection returns, per Abode's own FAQ.

What costs money: video recording (event clips come with the paid tiers), AI detections, cellular backup, and professional monitoring. Abode's published upgrade path is Standard at $8.49/mo or $79.99/yr (self-monitoring extras: 30-day timeline, AI detections, rich notifications) and Pro at $26.99/mo or $245.99/yr (24/7 professional monitoring plus 4G cellular backup). Camera-only users can add clip storage at $3.99/mo per camera, and continuous 24/7 recording is $9.99/mo per camera.

For a self-monitored household that wants a hub-based system with real sensors, app control, and no recurring cost, Abode's free tier is the strongest published baseline in this group, and the Home Assistant integration makes it a natural fit if you run your own automation stack (see Home Assistant security systems).

SimpliSafe unmonitored mode: solid basics, quiet gaps

SimpliSafe officially supports running its system with no plan, and its support pages spell out the split. Without any subscription you keep: live video feeds from your cameras in the SimpliSafe app, and remote arm/disarm from the app. Both require a working internet connection, per SimpliSafe.

Ring's own support documentation is direct about what a subscription-free Ring setup does: you can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen, and nothing is recorded. Events are only recorded after you subscribe.

The part that surprises Ring Alarm owners is arming. Ring's published plan footnotes state that a compatible Ring subscription is required for digital arming and disarming and certain other in-app features. In practice that means without a plan you arm and disarm from the keypad, not your phone. Eufy and Aqara: local storage as the business model

Eufy's security line is explicitly marketed as local-first: its published positioning is local storage with no monthly fee, with footage encrypted and stored on the device or the HomeBase hub at no additional cost, and its LocalSecure system line is sold as a DIY security system with no monthly fee. Cloud backup exists as an option, but the default architecture keeps recordings in your house. The practical trade-offs: footage stored locally is lost if the device holding it is stolen, and advanced features vary by camera generation, so check the specific model's published spec sheet before buying.

Aqara takes a similar line. By its published product materials: the Camera E1 supports up to 512GB of local microSD storage plus NAS backup, the Camera Hub G3 does AI face and pet recognition locally and doubles as a Zigbee hub, the G5 Pro outdoor camera has 8GB of built-in storage with no subscription needed, and the Video Doorbell G4 includes free local storage and free 7-day event-based cloud clips. One honest footnote for Apple households: HomeKit Secure Video, which several Aqara and Eufy cameras support, stores footage through Apple's iCloud+, which is a separate paid Apple subscription per Apple's own documentation. It is not an Aqara or Eufy fee, but it is not $0 either.

For camera-first setups (as opposed to full alarm systems with entry sensors and sirens), these two brands plus the options in no-subscription security cameras are the core of the fee-free market.

Wyze free tier: know exactly what you get

Wyze cameras are among the cheapest ways into self-monitoring, and Wyze publishes precisely what every user gets without paying, on its About Cam Plus support page: motion and sound alerts, alarm sound detections, live stream viewing, timelapse recording, image-only cloud storage, and 24/7 local recording to a microSD card.

The key phrase is image-only. Without a Cam Plus subscription, the cloud Events tab holds thumbnail snapshots of motion events, not video clips. Full video capture of events, AI detections (person, pet, vehicle, package), and 14-day rollover cloud video all require Cam Plus, per the same page. The workaround Wyze itself documents is the microSD card: continuous 24/7 local recording is free, so a card in each camera gives you reviewable footage at $0/month, viewed by scrubbing the timeline in the app rather than tapping a neat event clip.

A Wyze-based $0 setup is therefore workable if you accept snapshot-grade alerts and card-based review. Budget for a decent microSD card per camera, and remember the local-storage caveat that applies everywhere: stolen camera, gone footage.
