Is Abode Worth It? Free Tier, Pro Plan and Limits
Abode is worth it if you want a DIY alarm that works with no subscription and plugs into HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, Z-Wave or Zigbee. Professional monitoring is $26.99 a month or $245.99 a year as of October 2026, with no contract. It is a weaker fit if you want someone else to install it.

What does Abode cost?
Abode publishes three levels on its plans page, all contract-free with no cancellation fees, as of October 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| No subscription | $0 | $0 | App access, live video from connected cameras, smart home integrations, push notifications |
| Standard | $8.49 | $79.99 | 30-day event timeline, AI detection of people, packages and pets, rich notifications; built for self-monitoring |
| Pro | $26.99 | $245.99 | Everything in Standard plus 24/7 professional monitoring, 4G cellular backup, automatic emergency dispatch |
Two video add-ons are priced separately: 24/7 continuous recording with 10 days of history is $9.99 a month per camera, and a camera-only plan (cameras, no security hub) is $3.99 a month per camera.
By our arithmetic, three years of Pro costs $737.97 on annual billing or $971.64 paid monthly. Three years of Standard on annual billing is $239.97. Annual Pro works out to about $20.50 a month, below SimpliSafe's 76 cents a day for Standard monitoring (about $22.80 in a 30-day month). Full plan detail is in Abode monitoring cost.
What do you get without paying anything?
This is Abode's main difference. Its FAQ says the system works out of the box with no subscription: full app access, live video streaming from connected cameras, smart home integrations with Apple HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home, and real-time push notifications. Abode lists further integrations with Home Assistant, IFTTT, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Sonos.
The catch is what happens when something goes wrong. Without Pro, nobody at a monitoring center is watching. Abode's plan table indicates that on lower tiers you have to act to forward an alarm to the monitoring center, while Pro forwards it automatically. Abode's FAQ also says that on the free or Standard plan, if your internet drops, the siren still sounds locally but you get no remote notifications until the connection returns. Pro adds 4G cellular backup to keep the system connected.
Two fine-print points: Apple HomeKit works only with the Iota and Smart Security Kit hubs, per Abode's plan page, and Abode's video features beyond live view sit behind Standard or the paid add-ons. If local control matters to you, Home Assistant security systems covers how Abode fits into a self-hosted setup.
How does Abode compare with SimpliSafe and Ring Alarm?
Against SimpliSafe, by published pricing as of October 2026:
| Abode Pro | SimpliSafe Core | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $26.99/mo or $245.99/yr | $1.10/day (about $33 in a 30-day month) |
| Contract | None | None |
| Free tier | Yes, app, live video, integrations | No free monitoring tier; self-monitoring with recordings is $0.33/day |
| Smart home | HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, Z-Wave, Zigbee | Alexa, Google Assistant, August locks |
| Warranty | Not listed on the plans page | Lifetime hardware warranty with an active monitoring plan |
Of the two, by published pricing, Abode Pro costs less than SimpliSafe Core, and on annual billing it also undercuts SimpliSafe's cheaper Standard monitoring tier (76 cents a day); Abode's integration list is also broader. SimpliSafe offers more monitoring services on its upper plans, such as live-agent outdoor protection. The full comparison is in Abode vs SimpliSafe, and the Ring matchup is in Abode vs Ring Alarm.
Who should pick Abode?
Abode fits if:
- You want to start with no monthly bill and add monitoring later. Abode says plan changes take effect immediately from the app, with no penalties.
- You run a smart home and want the alarm in it.
- You want professional monitoring at a low annual price and are fine installing it yourself.
Pick something else if:
- You want a technician to install and service the system.
- You plan to stay on the free tier and expect help to be sent automatically. Without Pro there is no automatic dispatch, which is a real safety tradeoff for fire and break-ins when you are away.
Abode also claims on its plans page that most users save more on insurance than their plan costs, and cites discounts of 5 to 30%. That is Abode's marketing claim, not an insurer's figure. Delaware's insurance department, for example, says you can usually get at least 5% for a smoke detector, burglar alarm or deadbolts, and that some companies may cut premiums by as much as 15% or 20% for a sprinkler system plus a fire and burglar alarm that reports to a monitoring station; see does home security lower insurance before counting on it.
