Home Insurance Security Discounts by Insurer (2026)

State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, Travelers, American Family and Lemonade all say on their own sites, as of October 2026, that alarms or security devices can earn a homeowners discount. Only American Family attaches a figure, a 5% home security discount mentioned in its page's search description rather than in the page text; the other seven insurers we checked (those six plus Progressive's guidance page) publish no percentage. Travelers and American Family name smart home devices, and State Farm says its former ADT discount offer has ended.

Figures researched 2026-10-01; each source below carries its access date. Prices change; treat any price here as "as of" its date.

Which insurers offer a security system discount?

Each row below is what the insurer's own website says, checked October 2026. We list devices only where the insurer names them.

InsurerDiscount name on its siteDevices it namesPublishes a percentage?
State FarmHome security insurance discount (protective device)Fire, smoke or burglar alarms, or other eligible home monitoring systemsNo
AllstateProtective device discountBurglar alarm, deadbolts, smoke detectors, sprinklers, monitored fire alarms; its discount guide also lists water and gas leak detectorsNo
NationwideProtective deviceSmoke detectors, fire alarms, burglar alarms or other qualifying devicesNo
Liberty MutualSafety devicesDead bolt locks, burglar alarms, smoke detectorsNo
TravelersProtective device discountSmoke detectors and fire alarms, interior sprinklers, home security systems, smart or connected home tech that alerts you to fire or burglaryNo
American FamilySafe, Secure, Smart Home discountA smart home device or home security systemNot in the page text; the page's search description mentions a 5% home security discount
LemonadeProtective devices (homeowners and renters)Deadbolts, burglar alarms, smoke alarmsNo
ProgressiveGuidance page, not a named discountSays many insurers credit cameras, alarm systems with door, window and motion sensors, and monitored smoke detectorsNo

The pattern holds across all eight: the discount exists, the page text commits to no number (American Family's 5% appears only in its page description), and availability varies by state or policy. State Farm notes its discounts vary by state and that ADT home monitoring system discounts previously offered to its homeowners customers are no longer available.

When you call, use the insurer's own name for the discount from the second column. Agents look discounts up by name, and asking for the "protective device" or "Safe, Secure, Smart Home" discount gets a faster, firmer answer than asking whether an alarm helps.

How big are these discounts?

Apart from American Family's 5% page description, no insurer in the table publishes a figure, so the broadest public numbers come from a regulator. The Delaware Department of Insurance tells consumers they can usually get discounts of at least 5% for a smoke detector, burglar alarm or deadbolts, and that some companies may cut premiums by as much as 15% or 20% for a sophisticated sprinkler system plus a fire and burglar alarm that rings at the police, fire or other monitoring stations. That page is long-standing consumer guidance, not a current rate survey.

On that guidance, basic devices earn small discounts, and the larger figures are tied to monitored fire and burglary protection combined with sprinklers. Treat any figure as a reason to ask your agent, not as a promise. Whether the discount justifies buying a system is covered in does home security lower insurance.

What do insurers ask for as proof?

The insurer pages above rarely spell out the paperwork, so the proof step usually runs through your monitoring provider. Providers such as ADT, SimpliSafe, Ring, Frontpoint and Cove issue an alarm or monitoring certificate you can send to your agent; the steps for each are in how to get an alarm certificate for insurance.

A few patterns from the insurer pages are worth acting on:

  • Monitored beats unmonitored. Allstate says alarms may lower premiums especially if they are monitored, and State Farm's renters page names a monitored fire or burglar alarm.
  • Water and fire count too. Allstate lists water leak detectors and Travelers names connected devices that alert you to fire. If you have monitored leak sensors, mention them; see monitored water leak sensors.
  • Renters can qualify. State Farm and Lemonade both describe security device discounts on renters policies; details are in renters insurance security discounts.

If you are adding professional monitoring partly for the insurance credit, get your insurer's actual number and a real monitoring quote in the same week, then do the net math. Our quote tool collects quotes from professional monitoring providers through a short questionnaire.
