What does an Arlo camera do without a subscription?

Arlo answers the question directly in the FAQ on its plans page: a plan is not required, and you can still use your Arlo product "with certain features." Arlo's own article on using a camera without a subscription lists what those features are:

• Live video feed in the Arlo app
• Motion detection alerts to your phone
• Two-way audio
• Local storage recording to a microSD card, but only with the Arlo Go 2 LTE camera or an Arlo SmartHub

What is missing from that list matters more than what is on it. Cloud video storage sits on Arlo's subscription list, not the free one. So a typical Arlo Wi-Fi camera with no plan and no SmartHub will alert you and let you look live, but it keeps nothing you can review after the fact. If motion happens while you are not watching, there is no clip.

That puts unsubscribed Arlo close to unsubscribed Ring (see does Ring require a subscription) and well behind brands built around local storage. If recording with no fee is the goal, start with no-subscription security cameras instead.

How much does Arlo Secure cost in 2026?

Arlo renamed its plans this year (its plans page notes the names "have recently changed"). As of October 2026, the US plans page lists four price points:

On our arithmetic from those prices, paying yearly saves $24 on either Smart Aware option, $59.90 on Smart Secure and $120 on Ultra Secure, which matches Arlo's "save up to $120/yr" line. One plan covers one address: Arlo's FAQ says a second property needs its own subscription.

Every new Arlo camera, doorbell, floodlight or Home Security System includes a free 1-month trial, which Arlo says starts when you finish onboarding the device in the app. After the trial, the recording features stop unless you subscribe.

What each Arlo plan adds

All three plan families include, per Arlo's plans page, 60-day video history in the Arlo cloud, smart activity zones, person, animal, vehicle and package detection, person and vehicle recognition, fire detection (beta), event captions, video search, priority support, Arlo's theft replacement program and a 15% discount on arlo.com.

The tiers split on emergency features:

• Smart Aware: the recording and detection features above, no emergency response.
• Smart Secure: adds Threat Assessment, 24/7 Emergency Response (one tap to have an agent send help to the camera's location), the Arlo Safe app for personal safety, and 24/7 professional monitoring. Arlo's footnotes say professional monitoring requires an Arlo Home Security System, sold separately, so a cameras-only home does not get alarm monitoring from this plan.
• Ultra Secure: everything in Smart Secure plus 24/7 continuous recording on up to 3 cameras. Arlo says those continuous recordings are kept for 30 days, cannot be downloaded, and require cameras plugged into AC power.

An honest caveat on the emergency tiers: a self-monitored camera plan is not the same as a monitored alarm. If professional dispatch on a break-in is the reason you are shopping, compare it with dedicated monitoring in is professional monitoring worth it.

Is Arlo still worth it without a plan?

On paper, Arlo hardware without a subscription is a live camera with alerts. That suits a narrow buyer: someone who only wants to check in live, or who already owns an Arlo SmartHub for local recording. For everyone else the realistic cost is hardware plus at least $9.99 a month for one camera, or $19.99 for a whole home.
