Arlo vs Ring Cameras: Plans, Storage and Specs
As of October 2026, Ring's cheapest camera plan is $4.99 a month (one camera, up to 180 days of history) and Arlo's is $9.99 (one camera, 60 days). With no plan, both give live view and alerts but save no cloud video; only Arlo can record locally without a plan, via a SmartHub or the Go 2.

How much do Arlo and Ring camera plans cost?
Both brands sell the camera once and the recording as a subscription. Prices below are from each company's own plan page as of October 2026. Ring adds tax on top of the listed price.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Cameras covered | Cloud video history |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ring Solo | $4.99 | $49.99 | One device | Up to 180 days |
| Ring Multi | $9.99 | $99.99 | All devices at one location | Up to 180 days |
| Ring Pro | $19.99 | $199.99 | All devices at one location | Up to 180 days, plus 24/7 professional monitoring for Ring Alarm |
| Arlo Smart Aware (single camera) | $9.99 | $95.88 | One camera | 60 days |
| Arlo Smart Aware (unlimited) | $19.99 | $215.88 | Unlimited cameras | 60 days |
| Arlo Smart Secure | $29.99 | $299.98 | Unlimited cameras | 60 days, plus emergency response and professional monitoring |
| Arlo Ultra Secure | $49.99 | $479.88 | Unlimited cameras | 60 days, plus 24/7 recording on up to 3 cameras |
Arlo renamed its plans on September 15, 2026 (Secure Plus became Smart Aware, Secure Premium became Smart Secure) and says the prices did not change. If you read an older review that quotes "Arlo Secure" tiers, the numbers should still match.
The gap widens with more cameras. For three cameras at one address, Ring Multi is $99.99 a year and Arlo's unlimited Smart Aware plan is $215.88 a year. Over three years that is $299.97 against $647.64, our arithmetic from the yearly prices above.
Continuous recording is priced differently too. Ring sells 24/7 recording as a $3 per camera per month add-on to any plan on eligible cameras, with those recordings kept in the cloud for up to 14 days. Arlo bundles 24/7 recording into Ultra Secure only, covering up to three cameras with 30 days of continuous history.

What works on Arlo and Ring with no subscription?
Neither brand locks the camera when you skip the plan, but neither saves cloud video for free either.
Ring without a plan. Ring's support pages say you can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen. A subscription is required to review recorded video, and events are only recorded after you subscribe. Ring's local storage option, Ring Edge, keeps video on a microSD card inside a Ring Alarm Pro base station, and Ring states it requires a compatible Ring subscription. So for Ring cameras there is no published way to keep recordings with no plan at all. Our page on whether Ring requires a subscription covers the details.
Arlo without a plan. Arlo's plan page says a plan is not required and that you keep certain features without one. Arlo's own blog lists live video, motion alerts, two-way audio, and local microSD recording when you use an Arlo SmartHub or the Arlo Go 2. Cloud video history, smart activity zones, and person, vehicle, and package detection are listed as subscription features. We cover the rest in does Arlo require a subscription.
| With no plan | Ring | Arlo |
|---|---|---|
| Live view | Yes | Yes |
| Motion alerts | Yes | Yes |
| Cloud recordings | No | No |
| Local recording | No published option without a plan | microSD via SmartHub or Go 2 |
| Person, vehicle, package alerts | Plan feature | Plan feature |
Both brands start a free trial when you set up a new device: 30 days for Ring, one month for Arlo.
How do Arlo and Ring cameras compare on paper?
Prices are from each brand's US store as of October 2026. Most of these were showing a sale price below a higher original price, so treat them as current promotional prices, not stable list prices.
| Camera | Price (was) | Resolution | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring Outdoor Cam | $39.99 ($79.99) | 1080p HD | Battery |
| Ring Outdoor Cam 2K | $49.99 ($99.99) | 2K | Battery or plug-in |
| Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Pro (plug-in) | $129.99 ($199.99) | 4K | Plug-in |
| Arlo Essential (2025) | $39.99 ($49.99) | Not listed on the lineup page | Plug-in |
| Arlo Essential (3rd Gen) | $69.99 | Not listed on the lineup page | Battery |
| Arlo Pro (6th Gen) | $100.99 ($124.99) | 2K HDR | Battery |
| Arlo Go 2 | $159.99 ($199.99) | Not listed on the lineup page | LTE and Wi-Fi |
A few published specs worth comparing. Ring lists a 140 degree horizontal field of view on the Outdoor Cam 2K and 110 degrees horizontal on the 1080p Outdoor Cam, and both connect on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Arlo lists the Pro (6th Gen) with 2K HDR, color night vision, 12x zoom, and a 160 degree field of view.
The practical hardware difference is the Arlo Go 2. It is the only LTE camera in the table above, which matters for a cabin, barn, or lot with no Wi-Fi; our guide to security cameras without WiFi covers that case. Ring's lineup leans on low entry prices and more power options per model (battery, plug-in, wired, solar, and PoE versions of several cameras).
Should you pick Arlo or Ring?
Of the two, by published pricing and specs as of October 2026:
Pick Ring if you plan to pay for recording anyway and want the cheapest way to cover a whole house. Ring Multi covers every camera at one address for $99.99 a year, less than half of Arlo's unlimited tier, and keeps up to 180 days of history against Arlo's 60. Ring also lists cheaper 24/7 recording per camera.
Pick Arlo if you want some recording with no subscription at all (through a SmartHub or the Go 2), you need an LTE camera, or you want one-tap emergency response from a camera alert: Arlo's Smart Secure and Ultra Secure plans let you connect to live agents who can send police, fire, or medical help to the camera's location.
Pick neither if avoiding monthly fees is the whole point. Brands built around local storage, such as eufy and Reolink, record to the camera or a hub with no plan; our no-subscription security cameras roundup compares them, and Arlo vs eufy shows the cost gap over three years.
If you are also looking at Blink, Amazon's other camera brand, Blink vs Ring compares the two on battery life, storage, and plan cost.
