Cove vs Abode

Cove is a monitoring-first system: every published plan includes 24/7 professional monitoring, from $22.99 to $42.99 per month as of October 2026, and Cove publishes no self-monitoring plan. Abode is a smart-home-first system: it works with no subscription at all, offers a $8.49 per month Standard plan that is self-monitored but lets you refer an alarm to Abode's monitoring center from the app, and charges $26.99 per month (or $245.99 per year) for 24/7 professional monitoring that forwards alarms automatically. Neither requires a contract. Pick Cove if dispatch is the point and you want the simplest monitored setup; pick Abode if you want Apple HomeKit, Z-Wave or Zigbee, or the option to self-monitor and call in the monitoring center only when you choose.

For 24/7 monitoring where alarms reach the monitoring center automatically, Cove Basic ($22.99 per month) is $4 a month below Abode Pro ($26.99) on monthly billing. Abode's annual Pro price works out to about $20.50 per month (our arithmetic on the published $245.99), which undercuts Cove Basic. Abode's Standard plan is cheaper still, but on Standard nothing reaches the monitoring center unless you refer the alarm yourself; Abode says that if the center then calls and nobody answers, it dispatches police by default. Cove publishes no annual prepay option on the pages we read. Cove's camera tiers cost more than Abode Pro in either billing mode.

Abode also sells video add-ons: a 24/7 continuous recording option with 10 days of history at $9.99 per month (the plans FAQ says per camera; another line on the same page omits "per camera"), and a $3.99 per month per-camera plan for camera-only setups with no Abode hub.

For how both rank against the wider market, see cheapest professional monitoring.

Contracts, trials and what happens if you stop paying

Both are contract-free. Cove states all plans are "100% contract-free" with cancel-anytime billing and offers a 60-day risk-free trial with a full refund. Abode states its plans are contract-free with no cancellation fees, and plans can be changed or cancelled from the Abode app.

The bigger difference is what the hardware does without a plan.

  • Cove: Cove's support site says that if you cancel monitoring, the system "will no longer function fully." You can still arm and disarm at the panel, but you lose the Cove app, all notifications, alarm-event contact, the equipment warranty and the equipment credit. Cove's monitoring also only works with Cove-provided equipment.
  • Abode: Abode says the system works out of the box with no subscription, including app access, live video from connected cameras, push notifications and its smart home integrations. Without the Pro plan, the siren and sensors still work locally if the internet drops, but remote notifications stop until the connection returns.

If you want the option to drop to $0 a month later, Abode is the only one of the two built for it. The trade-off of self-monitoring is that nobody calls for help when you miss an alert; self-monitoring vs professional monitoring covers that in detail.

Equipment and connectivity

Prices in this section are as of October 2026.

Cove sells a hub plus touchscreen alarm panel, door, window, motion, glass-break, garage and environmental sensors, keyfobs, medical buttons, and its own indoor, solar outdoor, light bulb and doorbell cameras. By Cove's FAQ, the hub connects to your router by Ethernet, includes 4G cellular backup, and has a 24-hour backup battery. Sensors talk to the hub by radio; only the cameras need Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), and an account supports up to 10 cameras. Cove does not support Z-Wave. Professional installation is offered as an option. Cove prices equipment through a build-your-system quiz and was running a 70% off equipment promotion when we checked (Alarm Panel and Hub listed at $150, on sale for $45), so we are not quoting a package price.

Abode sells three kits. The cheapest, the Abode Security Kit, was listed at $150 and uses the Security Hub, which Abode says is not HomeKit compatible. The other two hubs work with HomeKit. The Iota is an all-in-one hub with a built-in camera, motion sensor and 93 dB siren that can connect by Ethernet or Wi-Fi; the Iota kit was listed at $399. The Smart Security Hub connects directly to the router, has a 93 dB siren, battery backup and 4G cellular backup, and acts as a Z-Wave and Zigbee automation hub; the Smart Security Kit was listed at $240. Abode's product pages show all three kits at 50% off when bought with a monthly Pro plan, and note the discount is removed if the plan is removed.

On paper both systems have cellular and battery backup on the monitored tier. Outage behaviour differs once you leave the monitored tier, which matters most for Abode owners on the free or Standard plan.

Smart home integrations

This is where the two differ most.

IntegrationCoveAbode
Apple HomeKitNot listed in Cove's smart home support pagesYes, on Iota and Smart Security hubs; not on the Abode Security Hub
Amazon AlexaOnly on the first-generation Connect hub; not on Connect+ Pro, Connect Flex or Cove SimpleYes
Google HomeOnly on the first-generation Connect hub; not on Connect+ Pro, Connect Flex or Cove SimpleYes
Z-WaveNo (Cove FAQ)Yes
ZigbeeNot listedYes
Home AssistantNot listedYes
MatterNot listedNo (Abode states it does not currently support Matter)

Cove's Alexa and Google articles say voice control works only with the first-generation Connect hub and is not supported on Cove Simple systems or on the Connect+ Pro and Connect Flex hubs. Cove notes that Alula Security operates its back-end cloud services.

Abode's plans page lists HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, IFTTT, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Sonos. Its HomeKit support covers arming, disarming and sensor status in the Apple Home app, but only on the Iota and Smart Security hubs. Abode's cheapest kit, the Abode Security Kit (listed at $150 as of October 2026), uses the Security Hub, which Abode says is not HomeKit compatible. For the Home Assistant side, see security systems that work with Home Assistant.

Which one to pick

Of the two, by published pricing and specs as of October 2026:

  • Pick Cove if you want professional monitoring and little else to configure. Every plan is monitored, the hub is wired to your router with cellular backup, Cove publishes a text-first alarm verification flow (InstaText, then a phone call, then dispatch), and Cove publishes a 60-day risk-free trial. Accept that the system is not useful without a plan, and that smart home support is thin.
  • Pick Abode if you want the system to sit inside a smart home, especially Apple Home, or you want to start self-monitored and add monitoring later. Annual Pro billing is also the cheapest 24/7 automatically monitored option of the two on paper. If you buy Abode for HomeKit, avoid the $150 Abode Security Kit, whose hub does not support it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cove or Abode cheaper for professional monitoring?
For 24/7 monitoring where alarms reach the monitoring center automatically, Cove Basic ($22.99 per month as of October 2026) is cheaper than Abode Pro ($26.99) on monthly billing. On annual billing, Abode Pro ($245.99 per year, about $20.50 per month by our arithmetic) is cheaper than twelve months of Cove Basic. Abode's Standard plan ($8.49 per month or $79.99 per year) also lets you refer an alarm to the monitoring center yourself, at no extra charge, but nothing is sent unless you act.
Can you self-monitor Cove or Abode?
Abode, yes: it works with no subscription and sells a $8.49 per month Standard plan for self-monitoring, which also lets you hand an alarm to Abode's monitoring center from the app. Cove publishes no self-monitoring plan, and its support site says that without a monitoring plan you lose app access and notifications and can only arm and disarm at the panel.
Does Cove or Abode work with Apple HomeKit?
Abode does, on its Iota and Smart Security hubs, but not on the hub in its $150 Abode Security Kit. We found no HomeKit support in Cove's smart home support pages, which cover only Alexa and Google Home on the first-generation Connect hub.
Do Cove or Abode require a contract?
No. Both publish contract-free, cancel-anytime plans. Cove adds a 60-day risk-free trial with a full refund.
Which has more smart home integrations?
Abode, by a wide margin on paper: HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, IFTTT, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Sonos. Cove supports Alexa and Google Home only on its first-generation Connect hub, not on its newer hubs, and does not support Z-Wave.
