Does Google Nest Cam Require Nest Aware? What's Free

No. Nest cams and doorbells work without a subscription, and Google's current models keep 3 to 6 hours of free event history by model, plus person, animal and vehicle alerts. Nest Aware is now Google Home Premium: as of October 2026, $10 per month for 30 days of event history or $20 per month for 60 days plus 10 days of 24/7 video.

Nest Aware is now Google Home Premium

Most searches still say Nest Aware, so the naming first. Google's help center says that as of October 1, 2025, Nest Aware (2nd gen) is called Google Home Premium. Existing subscribers were moved automatically, per the Google Store FAQ: Nest Aware became the Standard plan and Nest Aware Plus became the Advanced plan, with no change to billing.

The Nest Aware name survives in two places. Subscriptions bought through home security companies keep it; Google names ADT and AT&T. And Nest Aware (1st gen), the older per-camera plan, Google says remains with the same features; the Google Store points those subscribers to a whole-home plan priced once for all devices.

So if you are buying a Nest Cam directly from Google in 2026, the plan on offer is Google Home Premium.

What a Nest Cam does for free

Google publishes the no-subscription feature set per device on its Google Home Premium store page. Every camera listed there includes motion alerts, Activity Zones, person, animal and vehicle alerts, live view and talk and listen at no cost. Doorbells add package alerts. What varies is the free video history:

DeviceFree video history
Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)6 hours of event video previews, clips up to 10 seconds
Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen)6 hours of event video previews, clips up to 10 seconds
Nest Cam Outdoor or Indoor (battery)3 hours of event-based video history, clips up to 3 minutes
Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen)6 hours of event video previews, clips up to 10 seconds
Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen)3 hours of video history, clips up to 5 minutes
Nest Doorbell (battery)3 hours of video history, clips up to 3 minutes

The trade-off is visible in the table. The newest wired models keep a longer window, 6 hours, but only as 10-second previews. The battery models keep a shorter window, 3 hours, with longer clips. Either way, anything older than the window is gone, so a free Nest Cam is good for checking what happened this afternoon, not last week.

That is still more than some rivals give. Does Ring require a subscription covers Ring, where an unsubscribed camera saves no video at all.

Google Home Premium plans and prices

As of October 2026, the Google Store lists two plans:

PlanMonthlyYearlyVideo history
Standard (formerly Nest Aware)$10$10030 days of event-based history
Advanced (formerly Nest Aware Plus)$20$20060 days of event-based history plus 10 days of 24/7 history for cameras and wired doorbells

Google says the yearly prices save $20 and $40 respectively. One subscription covers the Google Nest devices in a home, rather than being priced per camera.

Standard adds intelligent alerts for familiar faces, whole-home history and Gemini automations. Advanced adds descriptive notifications, video history search, event descriptions and daily summaries. Continuous 24/7 recording is the dividing line: it exists only on Advanced, and the store page marks it as not available for the Nest Doorbell (battery), even with optional wired installation.

Google also says some Google One plans, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra, include Google Home Premium at no additional cost, which is worth checking before paying for it separately. If you cancel, Google says service continues to the end of the billing cycle and recommends saving important clips first.

Do you need the plan?

On paper, the free tier fits a household that mostly reacts to alerts in real time and wants a short buffer for the deliveries and visitors of the same day. The Standard plan is the step up for anyone who wants to look back days or weeks, which is the usual need after a theft or a dispute. Advanced is for people who want continuous recording rather than events.

And if you would rather not pay a monthly fee at all, no-subscription security cameras covers brands that record locally.
