Does Blink Require a Subscription? Sync Module vs Plan
No. Blink cameras work without a plan for live view, motion alerts and two-way audio, and they can save clips locally to a USB drive in a Sync Module 2 or a microSD card in a Sync Module XR. Without either a plan or local storage, nothing is recorded. Blink plans start at $3.99 per month as of October 2026.

What Blink does with no plan and no storage
Blink's support article on storage options says a camera does not need to store clips to work. With no plan and no local storage you still get:
- Live view
- Motion alerts
- Two-way audio
Live view has a cap. Blink's plans page says that without a subscription, live view is limited to 5 minutes for all devices; subscribers on wired and plug-in cameras can stream up to 90 continuous minutes. Smart detection, Blink Moments and custom snooze are listed as plan features.
In practice, a Blink camera with neither a plan nor a USB drive is a doorbell-style alert with a live peek. Nothing is saved for later.
Recording without a plan: Sync Module 2 and Sync Module XR
This is where Blink differs from Ring and Arlo. Blink publishes a no-subscription local recording path:
- Sync Module 2 with a USB flash drive, or
- Sync Module XR with a microSD card
Both the drive and the card are sold separately. Per Blink's support pages, clips save directly to the drive, appear in the app's clip list, and stay until you delete them or the drive fills. When it is full, new recordings stop until you free up space, so an unattended drive eventually goes quiet.
The limits matter before you buy:
- Sync Module Core does not support local storage, per Blink's storage article. Check which module ships in a bundle.
- Not every camera is eligible. Blink's Sync Module 2 FAQ lists the Outdoor 4, Wired Floodlight, Video Doorbell, Outdoor, Indoor (3rd Gen) and Mini as eligible for local storage. Legacy XT, XT2 and Indoor (1st Gen) cameras are not.
- Local clips are the only copy. If the module or drive is taken, the footage goes with it.
With a plan, the same Sync Module 2 or XR backs up cloud clips locally once every 24 hours, and those backups are viewable only on a computer, not in the app.
How much is a Blink subscription in 2026?
Blink raised US prices on October 8, 2025 (Basic went from $3 to $3.99 a month, Plus from $10 to $11.99) and now sells two families of plans. As of October 2026, its plans page lists:
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3.99 | $39.99 | 1 |
| Plus | $11.99 | $119.99 | Unlimited |
| Basic ai | $6.99 | $69.99 ($49.99 first year) | 1 |
| Plus ai | $19.99 | $199.99 ($149.99 first year) | Unlimited |
Prices are plus applicable tax. All plans include cloud video storage for up to 60 days, person and vehicle detection (not on some older models), extended live view, live view recording, Blink Moments, photo capture and automatic local backup with a compatible Sync Module. Plus adds a 10% discount on Blink devices bought on Amazon and an extended warranty through an Allstate service contract. The ai tiers add Blink Video Descriptions, Unusual Activity Alerts, Single Event Alerts and Known Faces (beta). Blink says the ai features are not available to customers in Illinois, and Known Faces is also unavailable in Texas and Portland, Oregon.
One device on Basic for a year is $39.99; three cameras on separate Basic plans would be $119.97 a year, a cent under Plus at $119.99 for unlimited (our arithmetic).
Plan or USB drive: which fits
A USB drive is the right call when you have eligible cameras, a Sync Module 2 or XR, and you mostly want a record of what happened at home. A plan earns its fee if you want the 60-day cloud copy that survives a stolen module, person and vehicle filtering to cut alert noise, or more than 5 minutes of live view.
For how Blink's pricing stacks up against Ring Protect, Google Home Premium, Arlo and Wyze, see security camera cloud plans compared. Blink and Ring are both Amazon brands with very different free tiers; does Ring require a subscription shows that an unsubscribed Ring records nothing, and Blink vs Ring cameras compares the two directly. If you want recording with no fee and no module, start with no-subscription security cameras.
Frequently asked questions
- Can Blink record without a subscription?
- Yes, with local storage. Blink says clips save to a USB drive in a Sync Module 2 or a microSD card in a Sync Module XR without a plan. Sync Module Core does not support local storage, and legacy XT, XT2 and Indoor (1st Gen) cameras are not eligible.
- Can I watch Blink local clips in the app?
- Yes. Blink's storage article says clips saved to local storage without a plan are viewable in the Blink app. Clip backups made while you have a plan are different: those are viewable only by moving the drive or card to a computer.
- How long does Blink keep cloud clips?
- Up to 60 days in the US with any Blink plan, or sooner if you set a shorter auto delete. Blink notes a deleted clip is erased from its servers and cannot be recovered by support.
- What happens to live view without a Blink plan?
- It still works, but Blink's plans page says live view is limited to 5 minutes for all devices without a subscription. Subscribers on wired and plug-in cameras can stream for up to 90 continuous minutes.
