Best Security System for Apple HomeKit

Of the systems covered here, Abode is the only complete alarm system (hub, sensors, siren and optional professional monitoring) with native Apple HomeKit support: you can arm, disarm and see sensor status in the Apple Home app and with Siri, on its Iota and Smart Security hubs. If you want to build your own, Aqara's hubs and Eve's Matter-over-Thread sensors work in Apple Home, but neither sells professional monitoring. SimpliSafe says it does not integrate with HomeKit, and we found no HomeKit support for Ring, Cove or Kangaroo on their own pages. Home Assistant can bridge other alarm panels into Apple Home.

Figures researched 2026-10-19; each source below carries its access date. Prices change; treat any price here as "as of" its date.

Three ways a product gets into Apple Home

There are three ways a security product ends up in the Apple Home app.

  • Native HomeKit. The manufacturer's hub or device pairs with Apple Home directly using a HomeKit setup code. Abode's hubs work this way.
  • Matter. Devices built on the Matter standard pair with Apple Home and with other platforms. Eve's Door & Window sensor is a Matter device that runs over Thread, so it needs an Apple home hub that is also a Thread border router. Eve lists Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 128 GB), HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini, with iOS or iPadOS 17.6 or later. Aqara's Hub M3 also uses this route: Aqara's US store describes it as a Matter bridge that exposes Aqara's Zigbee sensors to Apple Home.
  • Bridged. Software you run yourself, such as Home Assistant, presents another system's devices to Apple Home. Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge exposes any alarm panel it controls as a HomeKit security system.

For remote control and automations you need an Apple home hub in all three cases. Apple's current home hub options are HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV, per Apple Support. Abode's HomeKit guide still lists an iPad, which Apple no longer lists as a home hub.

Abode, the alarm system with native HomeKit

Abode is the one complete alarm system of those covered here that pairs natively with Apple Home. Per Abode's HomeKit guide, once paired you can:

  • Arm and disarm from the Apple Home app, or with Siri
  • Get HomeKit notifications from Abode motion and door/window sensors
  • Watch a live 1080p stream from the Iota hub's built-in camera in the Home app
  • Use Abode sensor events to trigger HomeKit automations, such as arming when the last iPhone leaves

Hardware that works: the Iota Hub and the Smart Security Hub, plus the Motion Sensor (bought after December 2018), Multi Sensor, Mini, Recessed and Slim Strip door/window sensors, Keypad 2, Water Leak Sensor and Smoke Alarm Monitor. Hardware that does not: the Abode Security Hub (in Abode's current, cheapest kit, the Abode Security Kit, listed at $150 as of October 2026), the Gen 1 Smart Security Hub sold before February 2019, and Abode's standalone cameras.

Limits Abode lists: HomeKit-paired third-party devices cannot trigger the Abode alarm, clip capture has to be done in the Abode app, and HomeKit cannot display Abode's fault warnings, so an arm command can silently fail if a sensor is open. Abode also states it does not currently support Matter.

Cost as of October 2026: HomeKit works with no subscription, per Abode's plans page. Professional monitoring is the Pro plan at $26.99 per month or $245.99 per year; the Standard plan, $8.49 per month or $79.99 per year, is self-monitored but lets you refer an alarm to Abode's monitoring center from the app at no extra charge. The Smart Security Kit lists at $240 and the Iota kit at $399, with 50% off shown when bought with a monthly Pro plan. Abode's other trade-offs are covered in Abode vs SimpliSafe.

Building your own with Aqara and Eve sensors

If you are happy to self-monitor, you can assemble a security setup from Apple Home-compatible parts.

Aqara. Aqara's Hub M3, listed at $159.99 on Aqara's US store as of October 2026, works with Apple Home (Aqara's US store describes it as a Matter bridge into Apple Home) as well as Alexa and Google. It supports Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, runs automations locally so they keep working when the internet is down, and has a 95 dB speaker that Aqara says can act as an alert siren. Aqara's door/window and motion sensors connect through an Aqara hub and then show up in Apple Home. Aqara positions this as a self-monitored DIY system; we did not find a professional monitoring plan sold by Aqara.

Eve. Eve Door & Window is a Thread contact sensor that works with Apple Home through Matter, and Eve also lists Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant. Eve's US store listed it at $43.95 as of October 2026 and describes it as working with no subscription, no registration and no Eve cloud. It is a sensor, not an alarm system: there is no siren or monitoring, so alerts and automations come from Apple Home itself.

Which sensors suit which doors and windows is covered in best door and window sensors. The trade-offs of running without anyone to call for help are in self-monitoring vs professional monitoring.

Systems that do not work with Apple Home natively

SystemApple Home status per the maker's own pagesWhat it does support
SimpliSafe"SimpliSafe does not integrate with Apple Home Kit at this time"Alexa and Google (arming only by voice), August locks
Ring AlarmNo HomeKit or Matter support listed on the Ring plan, alarm and product pages we readAlexa arming, with a subscription
CoveNot listed; Cove's smart home support pages cover only Alexa and Google HomeAlexa and Google Home, first-generation Connect hub only
KangarooNot listed; Kangaroo's FAQ names Alexa and Google AssistantAlexa and Google Assistant

If you already own one of these and want it in Apple Home, the route is a bridge, and it depends on whether Home Assistant can control the alarm panel in the first place. Our Home Assistant security systems guide covers which systems have official Home Assistant integrations.

Bridging an alarm panel through Home Assistant

Home Assistant's HomeKit Bridge integration exposes Home Assistant entities to Apple Home. Per its documentation:

  • Alarm control panels appear in Apple Home as a HomeKit security system, so you can arm and disarm from the Home app.
  • Door, window, motion, smoke, gas and moisture binary sensors appear as HomeKit sensors.
  • Cameras can be bridged, but HomeKit Secure Video is not supported for bridged cameras.
  • HomeKit allows a maximum of 150 accessories per bridge; larger setups need multiple bridges.

Two examples of panels Home Assistant can control: Abode, through Home Assistant's official Abode integration (which provides an alarm control panel entity), and Konnected, whose devices work locally with Home Assistant through the ESPHome integration. A bridge adds a server you have to maintain, and if it goes down, the Apple Home side goes with it, even though the alarm itself keeps running.

HomeKit Secure Video requirements

Cameras are separate from the alarm question, but Apple sets clear requirements for its own camera recording service, per Apple Support:

  • iCloud+ subscription. The 50 GB plan supports one HomeKit Secure Video camera, 200 GB supports up to five, and 2 TB and above support an unlimited number.
  • A home hub. Video is analyzed on the home hub (Apple names Apple TV 4K or HomePod) and uploaded encrypted to iCloud.
  • Recording window. You can view the last 10 days of activity in the Home app, and the video does not count against your iCloud storage.
  • Compatible cameras. Apple maintains the list on its Home accessories website. Abode's standalone cameras are not HomeKit-compatible per Abode's guide, so an Abode plus HomeKit Secure Video setup needs third-party cameras.

If you would rather avoid camera subscriptions entirely, see security cameras with no subscription.

Which to choose

Of the systems covered here, by each maker's published compatibility as of October 2026:

  • You want a real alarm system with optional professional monitoring, controlled from Apple Home: Abode, on an Iota or Smart Security hub (not the $150 Abode Security Kit, whose hub does not support HomeKit).
  • You want a self-monitored setup that lives entirely in Apple Home: Aqara hub and sensors, or Matter-over-Thread sensors such as Eve, with an Apple home hub.
  • You already run Home Assistant: bridge your existing panel with HomeKit Bridge, accepting that you now maintain the bridge.
  • You are set on SimpliSafe, Ring, Cove or Kangaroo: expect to control the alarm in its own app, not in Apple Home.

If monitoring is the deciding factor, is professional monitoring worth it is the place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What security system works with Apple HomeKit?
Of the systems covered here, Abode is the only complete alarm system with native HomeKit support, on its Iota and Smart Security hubs (not the hub in its $150 Abode Security Kit). Aqara hubs and Eve's Matter sensors also work in Apple Home but do not include professional monitoring.
Does SimpliSafe work with HomeKit?
No. SimpliSafe's support site says it does not integrate with Apple HomeKit at this time. It supports Alexa and Google Assistant, both for arming only by voice.
Does Ring Alarm work with Apple Home?
We found no HomeKit or Matter support for Ring Alarm on Ring's plan, alarm or product pages as of October 2026. The usual workaround is a bridge such as Home Assistant, and that depends on Home Assistant being able to control the panel.
Do I need an Apple home hub for a HomeKit security system?
For remote control and automations, yes. Apple's current home hub options are HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV. Abode's HomeKit guide requires a hub, Eve's Thread sensors need a hub that is also a Thread border router, and Apple requires a home hub for HomeKit Secure Video.
Does Abode support Matter?
No. Abode states it does not currently support Matter; its Apple Home support is through native HomeKit.
