| Vivint Safety & Security ($1,549.97 + 36 x about $59) | About $3,674 |
The closest like-for-like pair is a Ring kit with a doorbell against Vivint's Doorbell Security package: about $1,070 against about $2,944 over three years, by published prices. Vivint's HomeProtect agreement path is the one place the two come close, but it has no camera and commits you to 36 months. Ring's kit and doorbell prices above are sale prices against listed regular prices; at regular prices the Ring doorbell setup would be $1,214.58 (our arithmetic). What do you get for Vivint's higher price?
Installation and setup. Vivint states that all of its security system purchases include professional installation and an in-person walkthrough. Ring Alarm is designed for self-installation (plug in the base station, add sensors in the app), with optional professional installation billed per device.
One installed ecosystem. Vivint sells its own hub, doorbell and outdoor cameras, smart locks and thermostat as one system, and says its Outdoor Camera Pro uses Smart Deter, a warning tone and LED light aimed at people lingering on the property. It also lists compatibility with devices such as Nest Thermostat and Google Home. Ring's alarm integrates with Ring cameras, Ring doorbells and Alexa-enabled Echo devices once you have a Ring Protect plan.
Warranty. Vivint publishes a 120-day equipment warranty with in-home repair by its technicians. Ring publishes a 1-year manufacturer's warranty, extended on eligible devices while subscribed to Ring Multi or Ring Pro.
Monitoring and video. Vivint's monitoring blocks list two-way talk through the panel, false alarm cancellation from phone or panel, and built-in cellular with battery backup. Ring states it does not own its monitoring center; Ring Pro includes 24/7 monitoring, smoke and CO monitoring, and up to 180 days of video history.
Lock-in. Vivint states that every system purchase includes required 24/7 monitoring, and that without a Vivint services plan, functionality is limited, including loss of remote connectivity. Ring hardware works without a plan (arming from the Keypad), and Ring plans auto-renew monthly or yearly until you cancel. We could not find Vivint's early termination formula on the pages we read, so ask for it in writing before signing a 36-month agreement.
Which one should you pick?
Of the two, by published pricing and terms as of October 2026:
- Pick Ring Alarm if cost matters most, you are comfortable installing sensors yourself, and you want no contract. Its professional monitoring tier is $19.99 per month and covers every Ring device at one address.
- Pick Vivint if you want a technician to install and configure cameras, locks and sensors as one system, and you accept a higher monthly bill plus either a 36-month agreement or a large upfront payment.
