Wyze vs Tapo Cameras: Budget Models Compared

Tapo gives more for free; Wyze has the cheaper single-camera cloud plan. As of October 2026 the Tapo C120 ($39.99) and Wyze Cam v4 ($44.98) list the same resolution and field of view and both record to microSD without a plan. Tapo adds free person detection and a higher listed card ceiling; Wyze Cam Plus costs $2.99 a month.

How do the Wyze Cam v4 and Tapo C120 compare on specs?

Both are wired indoor/outdoor cameras; Wyze calls the Cam v4 its best-selling camera. Prices are from Wyze's store and TP-Link's Tapo store as of October 2026; the Tapo price is a sale price below a $44.99 regular price.

Resolution and field of view are identical on paper. The differences are in storage ceiling, weather rating (IP66 on Tapo against IP65 on Wyze), and integration: Tapo publishes RTSP and ONVIF support, which lets the C120 feed a third-party recorder or NVR. We did not find either listed on Wyze's Cam v4 spec sheet. None of this is measured; it is what each maker publishes.

Both makers' cameras need a microSD card for local recording, sold separately.

What do Wyze and Tapo cameras do without a subscription?

Both work without a plan, and both record to a card. The free features differ.

Wyze. A microSD card gives the Cam v4 continuous local recording with no plan; Wyze's example is up to about 4 days of continuous video on a 32GB card. Without a plan, the app's Events tab shows thumbnails rather than event videos, and Wyze lists person, vehicle, package and pet detection as Cam Plus features.

Tapo. Tapo says every camera includes live view, motion detection, two-way audio and app notifications with no subscription, and that AI person detection is included free, with pet and vehicle detection free on select models. TP-Link's microSD guide estimates 24-hour recording at 4MP (2560 x 1440, 15fps) of 48 hours on a 32GB card and 768 hours (32 days) on a 512GB card.

The two makers' recording-time figures use different settings, so do not compare the 4 days and 48 hours directly. The point that holds: Tapo's spec sheet lists a larger card ceiling than Wyze's spec sheet does, and a larger card keeps more footage locally. More on Wyze's side in does Wyze require a subscription.

How much do Wyze and Tapo cloud plans cost?

Cloud plans are optional at both. Prices from each plan page as of October 2026:

PlanMonthlyYearlyCoversCloud history
Wyze Cam Plus$2.99$29.99One camera14 days
Wyze Cam Unlimited$9.99$99.99Every camera14 days

Tapo Cloud Advanced AI$19.99$199.99Unlimited devices180 days, plus AI chat and facial recognition

Tapo lists its entry Cloud plan at $3.49 a month per device (two devices maximum) and at $34.99 a year for up to two devices. For one camera, Wyze Cam Plus is the cheaper plan; Tapo Cloud keeps 30 days of history to Cam Plus's 14. For many cameras, Wyze Cam Unlimited is $20 a year less than Tapo Cloud Advanced, while Tapo keeps far more history (180 days against 14).

Both offer a 30-day free trial for new users.

Which budget camera should you buy?

Of the two, by published specs and pricing as of October 2026:

Pick Tapo if you want to pay nothing after the camera. Free person detection, a 512GB listed card ceiling, a higher weather rating and RTSP/ONVIF support give the C120 more on paper with no plan, and at its current sale price it costs $4.99 less.

Pick Wyze if you expect to add a cheap cloud backup for one or two cameras (Cam Plus at $29.99 a year per camera), or you want the Cam v4's Wi-Fi 6 radio.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tapo better than Wyze?
On published specs with no subscription, the Tapo C120 offers more: free AI person detection, a listed microSD ceiling of 512GB (Wyze's spec sheet says 256GB), IP66 weather rating and RTSP/ONVIF support. The Wyze Cam v4 matches its resolution and field of view, and Wyze's Cam Plus is the cheaper cloud plan for a single camera.
Does Tapo require a subscription?
No. Tapo's own FAQ says its cameras work without a subscription, and Tapo lists live view, motion detection, two-way audio, notifications and AI person detection as free. Tapo Care cloud plans, from $3.49 a month, add cloud history and more AI features.
Does Wyze require a subscription?
No. Wyze cameras give live view without a plan, and wired models like the Cam v4 record continuously to a microSD card. Smart detection of people, vehicles, packages and pets, and event videos in the cloud, need a Wyze plan starting at $2.99 a month.
Can a Tapo or Wyze camera work with an NVR?
Tapo publishes RTSP and ONVIF Profile S support for the C120, the standard ways a third-party NVR connects to a camera. We did not find RTSP or ONVIF listed on Wyze's Cam v4 spec sheet.
