Nest Secure Discontinued: What Stopped Working and What to Switch To
Google ended support for Nest Secure on April 8, 2024. The system no longer connects to Google's cloud, does not work in the Nest app, sends no notifications and gets no software or security updates, and Google says it does not recommend continuing to use it, even offline. The transition offer (an ADT Self Setup system worth up to $485, or $200 to spend on the Google Store) could only be redeemed until May 7, 2024, so it is no longer available. The replacement options covered here are ADT (Google's partner for the transition offer; Nest camera support is documented for professionally installed ADT systems, not its current DIY line, ADT Blu), Ring Alarm and SimpliSafe.
Figures researched 2026-10-19; each source below carries its access date. Prices change; treat any price here as "as of" its date.
What Google shut off, and when
Google announced the end of Nest Secure on April 7, 2023, and support stopped on April 8, 2024. Google's own help page now states the result plainly: Nest Secure no longer connects to cloud services, so it no longer works in the Nest app and does not connect to the internet.
In practice that means, per Google:
- You cannot check the alarm's status, control its devices or receive alarm notifications from the Nest app.
- Nest Secure receives no further software or security updates, and Google warns of "unpredictable degradation in performance" if you keep using it, including in offline mode. Google does not recommend using it going forward.
- Any Nest Secure cellular backup subscription was canceled. Google's page says cellular backup subscriptions would be canceled by May 20, 2024.
- The Nest Guard can no longer act as the Wi-Fi bridge for a Nest x Yale Lock (covered below).
The same April 2023 announcement also ended Dropcam and Dropcam Pro support on April 8, 2024, and ended Works with Nest on September 29, 2023. Other Nest camera models were not part of that announcement.
The practical reading for anyone with a Nest Guard still on the wall: it is not a monitored alarm and it is not a supported device. If your home's protection still depends on it, it is worth replacing rather than relying on whatever it does offline.
The transition offers have expired
Google offered eligible Nest Secure owners a choice, sent by email with a unique coupon code: an ADT Self Setup system "on us" (up to a $485 value), or $200 to use on the Google Store. Google's FAQ for the ADT option said it came with 12 months of professional monitoring, then $19.99 plus tax per month, and that you could cancel monitoring and keep using the ADT Self Setup system without a subscription.
Google's FAQ also states those offers could only be redeemed until May 7, 2024. As of October 2026 there is no live Nest Secure trade-in or discount on Google's support page, which now says only that eligible users "have been emailed" an offer. If you are reading this because you just found an old Nest Secure in a house you bought, the offer window closed more than two years ago.
Two leftovers are still described on Google's current page:
- Recycling. Google says its third-party recycling partner will send a postage-paid shipping label for your Nest Secure.
- Support contact. Google still links a Nest Secure help center and a support contact for issues not covered online.
If you also own a Nest x Yale Lock
Some Nest Secure owners paired the system with a Nest x Yale Lock, using the Nest Guard as the lock's Wi-Fi bridge. That bridge stopped working with the end of Nest Secure support. Google's instructions:
- Only a Nest Connect can now connect the lock to Wi-Fi. Google says eligible lock owners were emailed in January 2024 with instructions to get a Nest Connect at no cost.
- If you set up a Nest Connect after the cutoff, Google's steps are to factory reset the lock, set up the Nest Connect in the Nest app, then add the lock again.
- Without a working bridge, the lock goes offline in the app, but the keypad still locks and unlocks the door.
So the lock does not leave you locked out. You lose remote control and app access until a Nest Connect is in place.
Replacement options compared
These are the systems covered here, with published monitoring prices as of October 2026. Equipment prices change with promotions, so this table sticks to the monthly service side and what each maker says about running without a paid plan.
| System | Published monitoring price | Contract | Without a paid plan, per the maker | Google ecosystem fit, per published pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ADT Blu (ADT's current DIY line) | Pro-Protect professional monitoring $24.99 to $37.99/mo depending on kit; Self-Protect (alerts to you only) from $14.99/mo | One month minimum | ADT says a monthly monitoring plan is required | ADT's Blu shop states Google Nest Cams are not compatible with ADT Blu systems; the shop sells Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest thermostats |
| ADT professional install | Current Google Nest camera promotion starts at $59.99/mo | 36 months (24 in California) | Not applicable: monitoring is the contracted service | Nest cameras and doorbells are sold with ADT professional installation; Nest Aware is included at no cost with ADT systems that have Nest Cams and Doorbells installed (ADT notes familiar face alerts are not available on cameras and doorbells used in Illinois) |
| Ring Alarm | Ring Pro plan, $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr | Auto-renews until canceled | Siren still sounds, but arming and disarming is from the Ring Keypad only, with no phone notifications and no emergency dispatch | Not addressed on the Ring pages we read |
| SimpliSafe | Standard $22.99/mo, Core $32.99/mo, Pro $49.99/mo, Pro Plus $79.99/mo | No contracts | Live camera view and app arming and disarming still work; no dispatch, no network backup, no recordings | Core, Pro and Pro Plus list arming with Google Assistant or Alexa |
ADT is the provider Google chose for the transition offer, and it now comes in two forms. ADT's online DIY shop is ADT Blu: the links for ADT's Self Setup packages open the ADT Blu shop, and that shop states that Google Nest Cams are not compatible with ADT Blu systems. ADT Blu's Self-Protect plan delivers alerts only to you, and ADT says it will not contact emergency responders on that plan; Pro-Protect is the plan under which ADT notifies emergency contacts or services.
Nest camera support sits on the professional install side. Google's ADT page lists the Nest devices customers can buy from ADT and have an ADT installer set up: Nest Doorbells, several Nest Cam models, Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Hub Max, Nest Mini, Nest Wifi, Nest thermostats, and Nest Aware. It adds that Nest Aware through ADT requires buying both a Nest device and the subscription through ADT, and that the partnership is limited to US customers. ADT's current professional install offer that includes a Google Nest camera requires a 36 month contract starting at $59.99/mo (24 months in California) as of October 2026, and ADT lists that offer as expiring 11/9/2026. Early termination on that contract can cost 75% of the remaining monthly charges, per ADT's terms.
Ring Alarm costs the least per month for professional monitoring of the systems covered here by published price, $19.99 on the Ring Pro plan as of October 2026. App arming and phone alerts do not need Pro: Ring's plans page lists remote arming and disarming under its Solo ($4.99/mo) and Multi ($9.99/mo) plans, as of October 2026, and Ring's support page says a self-monitored Alarm with a Ring subscription sends alerts to your phone. With no plan at all, Ring Alarm falls back to keypad arming and a local siren, which is more limited than SimpliSafe's unpaid mode.
SimpliSafe publishes five residential plans, from $9.99/mo self-monitoring with camera recordings to $79.99/mo Pro Plus, and its Core, Pro and Pro Plus plans list arming with Google Assistant or Alexa. Google's ADT page also documents arming and disarming an ADT system by voice once it is linked in the Google Home app. Ring's Google compatibility is not addressed on the Ring pages we read. SimpliSafe's Standard plan at $22.99 does not include camera recordings.

How to choose between them
Start with what you already own. If you kept Nest cameras or a Nest Doorbell, ADT is the only provider here whose published pages cover Google Nest cameras, but the conditions matter. Google's ADT page lists Nest cameras and doorbells as products you buy from ADT and have an ADT installer set up, and says Nest Aware through ADT requires buying both the Nest device and the subscription through ADT. ADT's current DIY line, ADT Blu, states that Google Nest Cams are not compatible with it. Nothing on the Ring or SimpliSafe pages we read documents Google Nest camera integration.
Then decide whether you want someone else watching the alarm. All three replacements here sell professional monitoring, and the gap between self-monitoring and paid dispatch is covered in self-monitoring vs professional monitoring. If you want to stay unmonitored, compare what each system still does with no plan (the table above), and see best self-monitored systems with no monthly fee.
Finally, if the reason you bought Nest Secure was to avoid a single vendor deciding when your hardware stops working, a locally controlled setup is the other route. Home Assistant security systems covers that option and its trade-offs, including the lack of professional dispatch by default.
Frequently asked questions
- When did Nest Secure stop working?
- Google ended support on April 8, 2024. From that date Nest Secure no longer connects to Google's cloud, does not work in the Nest app and receives no software or security updates, per Google's help page.
- Can I still use Nest Secure offline?
- Google does not recommend it. Its help page says Nest Secure gets no further software or security updates and that you may see unpredictable degradation in performance if you keep using it, giving offline mode as an example. Treat it as unsupported hardware, not as a working alarm.
- Is the free ADT system offer for Nest Secure owners still available?
- No. Google's FAQ states the Nest Secure offers (an ADT Self Setup system worth up to $485, or $200 for the Google Store) could only be redeemed until May 7, 2024. Google's current support page lists no replacement offer.
- Does my Nest x Yale Lock still work?
- The keypad still locks and unlocks the door. Remote control in the app needs a Nest Connect as the Wi-Fi bridge, since the Nest Guard can no longer do that job. Google's steps are to factory reset the lock, set up a Nest Connect, then add the lock in the Nest app.
- What should I do with the old Nest Secure hardware?
- Google's help page says its third-party recycling partner will send a postage-paid shipping label so you can recycle it. Replace the protection first so there is no gap, then recycle the old devices.
