Lorex vs Reolink: NVR Systems Compared by Spec Sheet
Reolink's 8-channel PoE kits cost less and list more storage, by published prices as of October 2026: four 5MP cameras with a 2TB recorder are $459.99 from Reolink and $709.99 from Lorex, and Reolink lists up to 16TB against Lorex's 10TB. Neither needs a monthly fee. Lorex's U3 cameras add red and blue deterrence lights.

What do Lorex and Reolink NVR kits cost?
An NVR kit is a network video recorder with a hard drive plus wired Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras: one Ethernet cable per camera carries both power and video. Prices below are from each maker's own store as of October 2026, for 8-channel kits with a 2TB drive.
| Kit | Cameras | Camera resolution | Price | Storage (included / max listed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reolink RLK8-410B4 | 4 bullets | 5MP (2560 x 1920) | $459.99 (was $542.99) | 2TB / 16TB |
| Reolink RLK8-800B4 | 4 bullets | 4K, 8MP (3840 x 2160) | $699.99 | 2TB / 16TB |
| Lorex Connect U Series with U3 2K+ turrets | 2 turrets | 2K+, 5MP | $529.99 | 2TB / 10TB |
| Lorex Connect U Series with U3 2K+ turrets | 4 turrets | 2K+, 5MP | $709.99 | 2TB / 10TB |
| Lorex Connect U Series with U3 4K bullets | 4 bullets | 4K | $789.99 (sold out on Lorex's store) | 2TB / not checked |
Compared like for like, four 5MP cameras plus an 8-channel NVR cost $250 less from Reolink than from Lorex at these prices, and the 4K four-camera kits are $90 apart. Lorex's U Series kit title notes that cables are not included, so budget for Ethernet runs; Lorex sells 100 ft Cat5e cables at $39.99 each on the same page. Lorex also sells the UA 8-channel NVR alone at $349.99 and U3 2K+ cameras at $89.99 each if you want to build your own mix.
How many cameras you actually need changes the math more than brand choice; our guide on how many security cameras you need counts by entry point.
How do the cameras compare on the spec sheet?
Published specs for the kits above. These are datasheet figures, not measured results.
| Spec | Reolink RLK8-410B4 camera | Reolink RLK8-800B4 camera | Lorex U3 2K+ turret |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 5MP, 2560 x 1920 at 25 fps | 4K 8MP, up to 20 fps | 2K+ (5MP) at 25 fps |
| Field of view | 80 degrees horizontal | 87 degrees horizontal | Not checked |
| Night vision | IR up to 100 ft | IR up to 100 ft | Color night vision and long-range IR |
| Smart detection | Person, vehicle (animal on some models) | Person, vehicle | AI detection |
| Audio | Audio recording | Audio recording | Not checked |
| Deterrence | Not listed | Not listed | Red and blue deterrence lights |
The headline differences on paper: Reolink lists night-vision range and field of view clearly on each kit page, while Lorex's U Series page leads with deterrence lighting (high-intensity red and blue lights meant to warn people off) and AI detection. Lorex lists continuous recording at up to 4K on the U Series NVR, so the same recorder can take 4K cameras later. Lorex kits are managed in the Lorex Connect app. Reolink publishes a 2-year limited warranty on the RLK8-800B4.

Do Lorex or Reolink NVR systems need a subscription?
No. Both brands sell these kits around a local hard drive in the recorder.
- Lorex states "No Monthly Fees" and "No subscriptions required" on its U Series kit page, and says the NVR records continuously to the included 2TB drive, expandable up to 10TB.
- Reolink lists person and vehicle alerts "without subscription" on the RLK8-800B4 page, and says the RLK8-410B4's 2TB drive can save days of 24/7 footage from four cameras locally.
Reolink's optional Reolink Cloud service is not a factor here: Reolink's support pages say it does not support battery cameras once they are added to a Reolink NVR, and the camera itself must support the cloud feature. Lorex sells a separate Lorex Connect Cloud+ line of Wi-Fi cameras, which is outside these wired kits.
The trade-off of any NVR is that footage lives in one box in your house. If the recorder is stolen or destroyed, recordings go with it, so hide it or lock it away from the cameras' entry points. Our no-subscription security cameras roundup compares NVRs with SD-card and hub storage.
Should you buy Lorex or Reolink?
Of the two, by published specs and pricing as of October 2026:
Pick Reolink if price per camera and storage headroom matter most. Its four-camera 5MP kit is the cheapest kit in this comparison at $459.99, it lists up to 16TB of storage, and its kit pages state field of view, night-vision range and frame rate up front.
Pick Lorex if you want visible deterrence (red and blue lights on the U3 cameras), a recorder that will take 4K cameras later, or the option to start with two cameras ($529.99) and add more on the same 8-channel NVR.
