Ring Alarm vs Ring Alarm Pro
Ring Alarm Pro is still sold as of October 2026. It is a Ring Alarm whose base station is also an eero Wi-Fi 6 router, and by Ring's pages that unlocks two things the standard Ring Alarm lacks: 24/7 Backup Internet that keeps your Wi-Fi devices online over cellular during an outage, and local video storage on a microSD card. Both extras need the Ring Pro plan ($19.99 per month or $199.99 per year). On sale as of October 2026, the 8-piece Pro kit is $299.99 against $249.99 for the standard 8-piece kit (Ring lists them at $434.92 and $304.92 before the sale). Buy Pro only if you will replace your router with it and pay for Ring Pro; otherwise the standard Ring Alarm covers the alarm side.

Kit prices, side by side
Prices as listed on ring.com as of October 2026. Both lines were on sale when we checked, so Ring's "was" price is shown too.
| Kit | Contents | Sale price | Was price (Ring's listing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring Alarm 5-piece (2nd gen) | Base Station, Keypad, 1 contact sensor, 1 motion detector, Range Extender | $199.99 | $244.95 |
| Ring Alarm 8-piece (2nd gen) | Base Station, Keypad, 4 contact sensors, 1 motion detector, Range Extender | $249.99 | $304.92 |
| Ring Alarm Pro 8-piece | Alarm Pro Base Station, Keypad, 4 contact sensors, 1 motion detector, Range Extender | $299.99 | $434.92 |
| Ring Alarm 14-piece (2nd gen) | Base Station, 2 Keypads, 8 contact sensors, 2 motion detectors, Range Extender | $329.99 | $464.86 |
| Ring Alarm Pro 14-piece | Alarm Pro Base Station, 2 Keypads, 8 contact sensors, 2 motion detectors, Range Extender | $379.99 | $594.86 |
At matched contents, Pro costs $50 more at the sale prices and $130 more at Ring's "was" prices, for both the 8-piece and the 14-piece kits (our arithmetic on Ring's listed prices). The sensors, keypad and range extender are the same family; the difference is the base station. Each kit includes a free 30-day trial of Ring Protect.
What the Alarm Pro base station adds
By Ring's product pages, the Alarm Pro Base Station does everything the standard base station does, plus:
- A built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router. Ring lists coverage of up to 1,500 sq. ft., supported speeds up to 900 Mbps, and expansion with eero extenders. Ring says Alarm Pro is designed to be your primary router, connected directly to your modem and replacing your existing network. It recommends against using Alarm Pro as an extender for another router, because that blocks many Ring Protect features, including Backup Internet. Wi-Fi settings live in the eero app.
- 24/7 Backup Internet. During an internet outage, Alarm Pro can keep your Wi-Fi devices and Ring system online over a cellular connection. 3 GB of data is included per month with a compatible plan. Extra data is $1 per GB per Ring's plans page and its Backup Internet help article; the Alarm Pro product page still says $3 per GB.
- Local video storage (Ring Edge). With a microSD card (sold separately) in the Alarm Pro, select Ring cameras and doorbells can process Smart Alerts and store video locally. Ring says Ring Edge needs both an Alarm Pro and a Ring Pro subscription.
- eero Secure network security, which Ring says requires a compatible Ring subscription.
- Expandable backup power. The internal battery runs up to 24 hours in Low Power Mode with only some features available; up to four Ring Power Packs (sold separately) add external backup.
The standard Ring Alarm base station has a 24-hour backup battery and supports Alarm Cellular Backup, which keeps the alarm itself able to send signals if your internet drops. What it does not do is keep the rest of your Wi-Fi network online, which is the job Alarm Pro's Backup Internet does.
Which Ring Protect plan you need for each
Ring renamed its Ring Home plans to Ring Protect plans in 2026; some Ring product pages still use older names such as "Ring Home Premium." Current plans and prices as of October 2026:
| Plan | Price | Alarm-relevant features on the plans page |
|---|---|---|
| No plan | $0 | Ring says products keep certain features without a plan |
| Ring Solo | $4.99/month or $49.99/year | One doorbell or camera only, so it does not cover a Ring Alarm |
| Ring Multi | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | All devices at one location; Cellular Backup; extended warranty |
| Ring Pro | $19.99/month or $199.99/year | 24/7 professional monitoring; Cellular Backup; Backup Internet; Local Video Storage |
| Virtual Security Guard | $99/month | Everything in Pro plus live video monitoring by agents |
The practical rule: Ring's own FAQ recommends the Pro plan for any Ring Alarm or Alarm Pro owner who wants monitoring. For Alarm Pro specifically, Backup Internet and Local Video Storage are listed only on Ring Pro and Virtual Security Guard, so buying Alarm Pro without Ring Pro leaves you with an alarm plus a router. Ring states it does not own its monitoring center; monitoring covers all 50 US states and Canada excluding Quebec.

Which one to buy
By published specs and pricing as of October 2026:
- Buy Ring Alarm Pro if you are happy to make it your main router, your home is around 1,500 sq. ft. or you will add eero extenders, and you will pay for Ring Pro. Then the extra $50 at sale prices buys Backup Internet for the whole Wi-Fi network and local video storage. It suits homes with unreliable broadband, or people who work from home and want Wi-Fi to stay up during an outage.
- Buy standard Ring Alarm if you already have a router you like (especially a non-eero mesh system), you plan to self-monitor or use a cheaper plan, or you only care about the alarm reaching the monitoring center during an outage. Alarm Cellular Backup on the standard base station covers that.
Either way, is Ring Alarm worth it covers the system against rivals, and home security during a power outage explains what backup batteries and cellular paths do and do not keep running.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Ring Alarm Pro discontinued?
- No. As of October 19, 2026, ring.com lists the Alarm Pro Security Kit in 8-piece ($299.99) and 14-piece ($379.99) versions, both on sale from higher "was" prices.
- Do I need a Ring subscription to use Alarm Pro's router?
- Ring's pages list a subscription requirement for Backup Internet, Local Video Storage and eero Secure, but not for the router's basic Wi-Fi, which is managed in the eero app. Ring lists Backup Internet and Local Video Storage only on Ring Pro and Virtual Security Guard.
- What is the difference between Cellular Backup and Backup Internet?
- Alarm Cellular Backup keeps the Ring Alarm itself connected so it can send alarm signals when your internet drops. Backup Internet, on Alarm Pro only, keeps your Wi-Fi network and connected devices online over cellular, with 3 GB of data a month included on a compatible plan.
- How much more does Ring Alarm Pro cost?
- At matched 8-piece contents, $50 more on Ring's October 2026 sale prices ($299.99 vs $249.99) and $130 more at Ring's "was" prices ($434.92 vs $304.92).
- Can I use Alarm Pro with my existing router?
- Ring advises against it. It says Alarm Pro should be your primary router, plugged into your modem, and that using it as an extender for another router blocks many subscription features, including Backup Internet. Existing eero units can be added as extenders to Alarm Pro.
