Ring vs Wyze Cameras: What the Subscription Buys
Wyze fits buyers skipping the subscription; Ring fits buyers paying for one. As of October 2026, the wired Wyze Cam v4 ($44.98) records 24/7 to a microSD card with no plan, while Ring cameras save no video without one. Whole-house plans cost the same ($99.99 a year), but Ring keeps 180 days of history to Wyze's 14.

What do Ring and Wyze cameras do with no subscription?
This is where the two brands split.
Wyze records locally for free on its wired cameras. Wyze's support pages say a microSD card lets a Wyze Cam record continuously and locally, with no Cam Plus required. The Wyze Cam v4 takes a card up to 256GB. Wyze's own example: a 32GB card holds up to about 4 days of continuous video. Without a plan, Wyze's Events tab shows thumbnails rather than event videos. Wyze also notes that its Battery Cam Pro, Video Doorbell and Video Doorbell Pro do not support local recording, so check the model before counting on free recording.
Ring does not record without a plan. Ring's support pages say you can view live video and respond to alerts without a subscription, but a subscription is required to review recorded video and events are only recorded after you subscribe. Ring's local storage option (Ring Edge on a Ring Alarm Pro base station) also requires a compatible subscription.
| With no plan | Ring | Wyze (wired cams) |
|---|---|---|
| Live view and motion alerts | Yes | Yes |
| Saved video | None | 24/7 to your own microSD card |
| Event clips in the app | No | Thumbnails only |
| Person, vehicle, package detection | Plan feature | Plan feature |
The catch with any card-in-the-camera setup: if someone takes the camera, the footage goes with it. That is the main thing a cloud plan protects against. More detail on each brand: does Ring require a subscription and does Wyze require a subscription.
How much do Ring and Wyze plans cost?
Prices from each company's plan page as of October 2026. Ring adds tax to its listed prices.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Covers | Cloud history |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wyze Cam Plus | $2.99 | $29.99 | One camera | 14 days |
| Wyze Cam Unlimited | $9.99 | $99.99 | Every camera | 14 days |
| Wyze Cam Unlimited Pro | $19.99 | $199.99 | Every camera | Up to 60 days, plus 24/7 emergency dispatch |
| Ring Solo | $4.99 | $49.99 | One device | Up to 180 days |
| Ring Multi | $9.99 | $99.99 | All devices at one location | Up to 180 days |
| Ring Pro | $19.99 | $199.99 | All devices at one location | Up to 180 days, plus professional monitoring for Ring Alarm |
For one camera, Wyze Cam Plus is $20 a year less than Ring Solo. For a whole house the two cost the same ($99.99 a year), and Ring's plan keeps up to 180 days of events against Wyze's 14. Wyze sells a Cloud 60 add-on for $2.99 a month per camera to stretch history to 60 days.
Continuous cloud recording is an add-on at both: Ring charges $3 a month per eligible camera and keeps those recordings up to 14 days; Wyze's Cloud CVR is $4.99 a month per camera, keeps 7 days, and is limited to one camera per account. On a wired Wyze camera, a microSD card does the continuous part for free.

How do the cameras compare on price and specs?
Store prices as of October 2026. Ring's are current sale prices with the original price shown; Wyze listed the Cam v4 at its regular price.
| Camera | Price | Resolution | Power | Local storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wyze Cam v4 | $44.98 | 2.5K QHD (2560 x 1440) | Wired (USB) | microSD up to 256GB |
| Ring Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam | $29.99 (was $59.99) | Not listed in the listing | Plug-in | None without a plan |
| Ring Outdoor Cam | $39.99 (was $79.99) | 1080p HD | Rechargeable battery | None without a plan |
| Ring Outdoor Cam 2K | $49.99 (was $99.99) | 2K | Battery or plug-in | None without a plan |
On the published spec sheets, the Wyze Cam v4 lists a 98.5 degree horizontal field of view, color night vision with a spotlight, an IP65 weather rating and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6. Ring lists 140 degrees horizontal on the Outdoor Cam 2K and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. These are datasheet figures, not test results.
The cost math over three years, from published prices: one Wyze Cam v4 with a microSD card you supply and no plan is $44.98 plus the card. One Ring Outdoor Cam 2K at its current sale price plus Ring Solo billed yearly is $49.99 plus $149.97, or $199.96 (our arithmetic, before tax).
Should you pick Ring or Wyze?
Of the two, by published pricing and features as of October 2026:
Pick Wyze if the goal is a low total cost. Its wired cameras record 24/7 to a card with no plan, and if you do want cloud clips and AI alerts, Cam Plus is the cheapest single-camera plan of the two at $29.99 a year.
Pick Ring if you will pay for cloud recording, want long history (up to 180 days), want battery cameras that record with a plan, or may add Ring Alarm with professional monitoring later. Ring Multi and Wyze Cam Unlimited cost the same for a whole house, so history length and ecosystem decide it.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Wyze cheaper than Ring?
- Usually. As of October 2026 Wyze Cam Plus is $29.99 a year for one camera against $49.99 for Ring Solo, and wired Wyze cameras can record to a microSD card with no plan at all. For every camera in a house, Wyze Cam Unlimited and Ring Multi are both $99.99 a year.
- Can Ring cameras record to an SD card?
- We could not find a Ring camera that records to its own SD card. Ring's local storage option, Ring Edge, stores video on a microSD card inside a Ring Alarm Pro base station and requires a compatible Ring subscription.
- Does Wyze work without Cam Plus?
- Yes. Wyze cameras give live view and alerts without a plan, and wired models like the Wyze Cam v4 record continuously to a microSD card. Without a plan, the Events tab shows thumbnails instead of event videos, and smart detection of people, vehicles and packages needs a plan.
- How long do Ring and Wyze keep cloud video?
- Ring's plans store motion events for up to 180 days. Wyze's Cam Plus and Cam Unlimited keep 14 days of event history, Cam Unlimited Pro keeps up to 60 days, and a $2.99 per camera Cloud 60 add-on extends the cheaper plans to 60 days.
