Kangaroo Security Review: Is a Cheap DIY System Enough?

Kangaroo is still selling hardware and plans as of October 2026, now under Scout Security, which completed its merger with Kangaroo (Roo Inc.) on December 22, 2025, acquiring 100% of Roo Inc. Its Complete Protect plan, $99 per year, is the cheapest plan with 24/7 professional monitoring (alarms sent to the monitoring center automatically) of the systems covered here. On paper it is enough for a renter, a small apartment or a detached garage where you mainly want alerts and low-cost 24/7 monitoring. It is a weaker fit where you need monitoring to survive an outage: Kangaroo says its devices need Wi-Fi to work, and we found no published cellular or battery backup.

Figures researched 2026-10-19; each source below carries its access date. Prices change; treat any price here as "as of" its date.

Kangaroo's status in October 2026

Kangaroo has not shut down, but it has changed hands and some of its support surface has thinned.

  • Ownership. Scout Security Limited announced that it completed its merger with Kangaroo (Roo Inc.) on December 22, 2025, acquiring 100% of Roo Inc.
  • Store. heykangaroo.com still lists products with prices and Buy Now buttons, and its pricing page still lists the Cam Protect and Complete Protect plans.
  • Gaps we found. Three of the nine items in Kangaroo's shop showed Sold Out on October 19, 2026: the 8-Piece Security Kit, the Motion + Entry Sensor (Kangaroo's only door and window sensor sold on its own) and the Water + Climate Sensor. The Front Door Security Kit, which includes two Motion + Entry Sensors, was still available.
  • Help links. Both FAQ links on heykangaroo.com pointed to help-center addresses that did not load when we checked, but Kangaroo's knowledge base at support.heykangaroo.com is live, with articles dated 2026.
  • App. Apple's App Store listing shows the most recent iOS app update as version 11.31, dated December 4, 2025, with no 2026 release listed as of October 19, 2026.

None of that means existing devices stop working. It does mean a buyer today is buying into a product line with sold-out core sensors and no 2026 iOS app update, which matters more for a security system than for a gadget.

Plans and published prices

All prices as of October 2026, from Kangaroo's own pricing and product pages.

PlanPublished priceWhat it adds
Basic$0App-based alerts out of the box; up to 5 cameras
Cam Protect$1.99/month, billed $23.88/year, per cameraPerson detection, full event capture, two-way audio, motion zones and microSD playback on the Indoor + Outdoor Cam; 30-day cloud storage; 90-day activity history; $250 theft and damage reimbursement (2 claims a year, up to $125 each)
Complete Protect$8.25/month, billed $99/year24/7 professional monitoring; the camera features above for up to 3 cameras; $1,000 theft and damage reimbursement (2 claims a year, up to $500 each); help filing for a homeowners insurance discount (Kangaroo says up to 20%)

Kangaroo's App Store listing shows slightly different in-app prices (Complete Protect Annual at $99.99, Kangaroo Complete Yearly at $98.99, Kangaroo Complete Monthly at $9.99, Camera Protect Annual at $23.99), so the price you see may depend on where you subscribe.

For scale: Ring's monitored plan is $199.99 per year, Abode's is $245.99 per year, and Cove's cheapest monitored plan is $22.99 per month, all as of October 2026 on each company's site. Kangaroo's $99 per year is the lowest of those for 24/7 monitoring by published pricing. Abode's $79.99 per year Standard plan costs less but only lets you refer an alarm to its monitoring center yourself, from the app. Our broader ranking is in cheapest professional monitoring.

Equipment and how it connects

Kangaroo is sold a la carte or in kits. Listed prices as of October 2026:

Motion + Entry Sensor$29.99Shown Sold Out; connects to Wi-Fi with no hub; 2 AA batteries
Motion Sensor$14.99
Water + Climate Sensor$29.99Water, temperature and humidity; shown Sold Out
Doorbell Camera + Chime$39.99Captures a rapid photo sequence stitched into motion, not continuous video; 3 AA batteries
Video Doorbell + Chime$69.99Rechargeable battery, IP54, person detection with a paid plan
Indoor + Outdoor Cam$49.99$58.99 bundled with a year of Cam Protect on the homepage

The same Front Door Kit page that lists $279 also carries a comparison table showing the kit at $99, so check the checkout price.

The structural point is connectivity. Kangaroo's FAQ says "a WiFi internet connection is needed for your Kangaroo devices to work," and that you need mobile data to get push notifications while away. The kits we read center on the Siren + Keypad, and we could not find a published cellular backup or a system backup battery on any Kangaroo page we read. Integrations are limited to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, per Kangaroo's FAQ; its kit FAQ says Alexa compatibility comes with Complete Protect.

Is a cheap DIY system enough

It depends on what you need the system to do when things go wrong.

Where Kangaroo is enough, on paper:

  • You rent, or you are covering a small space such as an apartment, a dorm-style room, a shed or a detached garage, and you mainly want to know when a door opens.
  • You want 24/7 professional monitoring at the lowest published price of the systems covered here, and you accept the limits below.
  • You value the bundled theft and damage reimbursement, which is unusual in this market. Read Kangaroo's claim terms before relying on it.

Where it falls short, on paper:

  • Outages. If your Wi-Fi or power goes down, we could not find any published way for a Kangaroo alarm to reach the monitoring center. Ring, Abode and Cove each publish cellular backup and a backup battery on their base stations (on Abode, cellular backup comes with the Pro plan). See home security without internet.
  • Siren level. Kangaroo lists 85 dB; Abode's hubs list a 93 dB built-in siren.
  • Ecosystem. No HomeKit, Z-Wave or Zigbee on the pages we read.
  • Support continuity. The ownership change, sold-out sensors and an iOS app with no 2026 update listed are reasons to buy cautiously.

If the outage gap matters to you, the low-cost alternatives with published cellular backup are Ring Alarm with Ring Pro (is Ring Alarm worth it) and Abode, whose cellular backup comes with its Pro plan and which also works with no subscription (best self-monitored systems with no monthly fee). Renters weighing the options should also see home security for renters.
