Wired vs Battery Video Doorbell: Which Fits Your Door

Choose wired if you have a working doorbell with a transformer inside the maker's voltage range (often 16 to 24 VAC): no recharging and, on many models, your indoor chime still rings. Choose battery if you have no doorbell wiring, rent, or want a no-drill install. Google rates its battery Nest Doorbell at about 1 to 6 months per charge.

Do you have the wiring a wired doorbell needs?

A wired video doorbell runs off the low-voltage transformer that powers your current doorbell button. Each maker publishes the range its doorbell needs, and the transformer has to fall inside it. Published requirements as of October 2026:

DoorbellRequired transformer
Ring Wired Doorbell 2K10 to 24 VAC
Ring Wired Doorbell 2K Plus, Wired Doorbell 4K Pro16 to 24 VAC, 10 to 40 VA
Ring battery doorbells (if hardwired)8 to 24 VAC, 5 to 40 VA
Google Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen)16 to 24 VAC, 10 VA minimum
Google Nest Doorbell (battery, if wired)8 to 24 VAC, 10 to 40 VA
eufy Video Doorbell (Wired) S33016 to 24 VAC, 30 VA or higher
SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Series 216 to 24 VAC, 30 VA max

The voltage and VA rating are printed on the transformer, which is often near the electrical panel, in a closet, or attached to the chime box. Ring's hardwiring guide adds that installation by a qualified electrician may be required in your area and that permits may be required by law, so check local rules before replacing a transformer.

No doorbell at all? Then a wired doorbell means running new low-voltage wire, which is why most people in that position choose battery. Ring also sells a Plug-In Adapter that its hardwiring guide says converts battery doorbells to wired power from an outlet; it does not work with the Peephole Cam or Video Doorbell Elite. The same wired-versus-wireless tradeoff for full alarm systems is covered in wired vs wireless security systems.

How long do video doorbell batteries last?

Only some makers publish a number, and every one of them says real life varies.

DoorbellPublished battery lifeBattery type
Google Nest Doorbell (battery)About 6 months at 2 to 5 recorded events a day; about 2.5 months at 13 to 16; about 1 month at 25 to 30Built in, rechargeable
Ring battery doorbells"Made to last for months between charges" (no figure)Built in on Battery Doorbell 2K; removable pack on 2K Plus and 4K Pro
eufy Video Doorbell E340No figure found; eufy lists a 6,500 mAh removable pack that charges fully in 5 hoursRemovable
Abode Video DoorbellNo figure; Abode says it depends on usageBuilt in, 2,600 mAh, not user-replaceable

Three things shorten battery life across brands, per Ring and Google's support pages: more motion events, more live viewing, and cold weather. Google adds that colder temperatures directly shorten life. A busy front door in a cold climate is the worst case for a battery doorbell.

Removable packs matter more than they look. With Ring's quick-release pack or eufy's E340 pack, you swap in a charged spare and the doorbell stays on the wall. With a built-in battery, the whole unit comes down to charge; Abode's FAQ says its doorbell cannot be used while charging. Published ratings for battery cameras beyond the doorbell are collected in security camera battery life.

Will it ring your existing chime?

Many buyers assume a wired video doorbell always rings the old indoor chime. Not always.

Ring's hardwiring guide states that the Wired Doorbell 2K Plus and the Wired Doorbell 4K Pro (except when powered by PoE) are not compatible with existing chimes and need Ring's Chime Kit Mini to sound inside. Ring's battery doorbells, by contrast, work with existing mechanical and digital chimes when hardwired, and the Battery Doorbell 2K product page says the same. SimpliSafe's Video Doorbell Series 2 lists a mechanical or digital chime as a requirement.

A battery doorbell that is not wired never rings the old chime. It alerts your phone, and some models come with a separate indoor chime (Tapo includes one with its D225). Abode's doorbell, for example, requires its included Chime Base and cannot use an existing wired chime at all.

What happens in a power outage?

A wired doorbell runs on house power through the transformer, so when the power goes out, it goes out. A battery doorbell keeps running on its battery. But both need Wi-Fi to send alerts and upload video, and most home routers also lose power in an outage unless they are on a backup supply. So in practice, a battery doorbell mostly helps during outages if your router has backup power or the doorbell can record locally.

Some makers address this directly. Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) keeps recording for one hour if your Wi-Fi goes down. eufy says the E340's battery kicks in as backup power during an interruption when the doorbell is wired. Vivint says its wired Doorbell Camera Pro keeps recording to onboard storage when Wi-Fi goes down.

None of this replaces an alarm system with cellular and battery backup. If outage resilience is the real concern, see home security during a power outage. For the rest of the doorbell decision, including storage and plan cost, start with the video doorbell buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a video doorbell without an existing doorbell?
Yes, with a battery model, which needs no wiring. Ring also sells a Plug-In Adapter that powers its battery doorbells from an outlet. A wired model would need new low-voltage wiring and a transformer, and Ring notes an electrician or permit may be required in some areas.
What voltage does a video doorbell need?
It varies by model. As of October 2026, Ring lists 10 to 24 VAC for its Wired Doorbell 2K and 16 to 24 VAC for its 2K Plus and 4K Pro, Google lists 16 to 24 VAC for the wired Nest Doorbell, and eufy lists 16 to 24 VAC at 30 VA or more for the S330. Check the label on your transformer.
Is a wired doorbell more reliable than a battery one?
It removes recharging and the risk of a dead battery, and Ring markets wired models for nonstop power. It does not survive a power outage on its own, while a battery model does, though both still need working Wi-Fi to alert you.
Can I hardwire a battery video doorbell?
Many allow it. Ring's battery doorbells accept 8 to 24 VAC, Google's battery Nest Doorbell accepts 8 to 24 VAC, and eufy's E340 can be hardwired, though eufy says the battery must stay installed.
