How Long Do Security Sensor Batteries Last? By Brand

Door and window sensor batteries are rated 3 to 5 years: SimpliSafe's Entry Sensor up to 5 years (one CR2032), Abode's Mini Sensor about 4 years (CR2450), Ring's newest Window & Door Sensor up to 3 years (two CR2032). Motion sensors covered here are rated 2 to 4 years. These are maker estimates; busy doors and temperature extremes shorten them.

Of the sensors covered here, the longest published ratings belong to panic buttons and leak or temperature sensors, which rarely transmit. Motion detectors sit at the short end, because they watch continuously and report every trigger. Ring's newest motion detector is rated up to 2 years on two AA cells, half of SimpliSafe's 4-year figure.

Two caveats on comparing these. First, makers measure under their own assumptions, and SimpliSafe and Ring both say life depends on usage. Second, Abode's water sensor page gives two different numbers, so treat the shorter one as the planning figure.

What drains security sensor batteries faster?

The makers name the factors:

  • Number of events. Every open, close or motion trigger is a radio transmission. Ring states battery life on its newest sensors "is dependent on number of events." A front door used all day will need batteries sooner than a guest-room window that rarely opens.
  • Distance to the hub or gateway. Ring adds proximity to the Sidewalk Gateway as a factor for its Amazon Sidewalk sensors. A sensor at the edge of range works harder.
  • Temperature and humidity. ADT notes that constant exposure to high or low temperatures or high humidity may reduce battery life. That is relevant for sensors in garages, attics and crawl spaces.

The broader point: the sensor batteries will need replacing several times over the life of a system. Our guide to how long security systems last covers the hub, panel and cellular hardware, which age on a different clock.

How do you know when a sensor battery is low?

Low-battery warnings come through the app. The two makers covered here that describe the warning in detail:

  • Abode says its Multi Sensor and Panic Button send multiple low-battery notifications so the battery does not fully die, and its Mini Sensor page says you get an app notification when it is time to replace the battery.
  • ADT shows a Low Battery notification in the ADT+ app and a System Issue Alert on the dashboard. ADT also flags a false warning after a battery change: residue on the battery or the metal contacts can trigger an unexpected low-battery alert, and its fix is to clean the battery and contact with an alcohol swab.

When you replace one, match the exact type printed in the table above. ADT says to replace only with a CR123A in its water sensor. A CR2032 and a CR2450 are both 3-volt coin cells but different sizes, and AA alkaline cells are what Ring specifies for its newest motion, flood and temperature sensors.

A practical routine: note the install date of every sensor in the app or on the inside of the battery cover, and when the first sensor of a batch warns, replace the whole batch at once. Sensors installed on the same day under similar use are likely to run down around the same time. Our door and window sensor comparison covers how the same three brands differ on range and gap tolerance. Smart locks run on different batteries and raise different questions; those are covered in what happens when a smart lock battery dies.

Frequently asked questions

How long do SimpliSafe sensor batteries last?
SimpliSafe publishes up to 5 years for its Entry, Water and Temperature sensors (one CR2032 each), up to 4 years for the Motion Sensor Gen 2, up to 3 years for the Glassbreak Sensor (CR123A) and 5 to 10 years for the Panic Button. All are usage-dependent.
How long do Ring Alarm sensor batteries last?
For Ring's newest models, Ring publishes up to 3 years for the Window & Door Sensor and Panic Button (two CR2032 each), up to 2 years for the Motion Detector (two AA), up to 6 years for the Flood & Freeze Sensor and up to 5 years for the Temperature & Humidity Sensor.
What battery does a door sensor use?
Usually a 3-volt lithium coin cell, but the size varies. SimpliSafe's Entry Sensor uses one CR2032, Ring's newest Window & Door Sensor uses two CR2032, and Abode's Mini Sensor uses a CR2450. Check the sensor before buying replacements.
Why does my sensor say low battery right after I installed it?
ADT says residue can remain on the battery or the metal contacts inside the compartment and cause an unexpected low-battery alert. Its fix is to clean the positive side of the battery and the contact point with an alcohol swab until no residue is visible, then reinsert the battery.
